ἀνα-παύω, [in LXX for fourteen different words, chiefly נוּחַ H5117, also רָבַץ H7257, שָׁאַן H7599, etc.;], to give intermission from labour, to give rest, refresh: Mt 11:28, I Co 16:18, Phm 20; pass., Phm 7, II Co 7:13. Mid., to ta, rest, enjoy rest: Mt 26:45, Mk 6:31 14:41, Lk 12:19, Re 6:11 14:13; as in Heb. of Is 11:2 (נוּחַ עַל H5117,H5921), τὸ πνεῦμα ἐφ' ὑμᾶς ἀ., I Pe 4:14. (In π. this word is used as a technical agricultural term; v. MM, VGT, s.v.; and cf. Le 26:34 f.; Cremer, 826.)†

  poetry and Ionic dialect ἀμπ-, future middle ἀναπαύσομαι: aorist ἀνεπαυσάμην Attic dialect and Hellenistic (but ἀνεπαύθημεν LXX.Lam.5.5): later, aorist passive ἀναπάη “IG” 14.158: future passive ἀναπαήσομαι variant NT.Rev.14.13, al.: present middle ἀναπάεται “IG” 14.1717, compare “PTeb.” 264 :—make to cease, stop or hinder from a thing, χειμῶνος.. ὅς ῥά τε ἔργων ἀνθρώπους ἀνέπαυσεν Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 17.550 ; ἀ. τινὰ τοῦ πλάνου give him rest from wandering, Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Coloneus” 1113 ; τοὺς λειτουργοῦντας ἀ.
