ἀνήρ, ἀνδρός, , [in LXX chiefly for אִישׁ H376, freq. אֱנוֹשׁ H582, also אָדָם H120, etc.;] a man, Lat. vir. 1. As opp. to a woman, Ac 8:12, I Ti 2:12; as a husband, Mt 1:16, Jo 4:16, Ro 7:2, Tit 1:6. 2. As opp. to a boy or infant, I Co 13:11, Eph 4:13, Ja 3:2. 3. In appos. with a noun or adj., as ἀ. ἁμαρτωλός, Lk 5:8; ἀ. προφήτης, 24:19; freq. in terms of address, as ἀ. ἀδελφοί, Ac 1:16; and esp. with gentilic names, as ἀ. Ἰουδαῖος, Ac 22:3; ἀ. Ἐφέσιοι, 19:35. 4. In general, a man, a male person: = τις, Lk 8:41, Ac 6:11.

ἀνήρ, ὁ, ἀνδρός, ἀνδρί, ἄνδρα,
  vocative ἄνερ: plural ἄνδρες, -δρῶν, -δράσι ᾰ, -dras: Aeolic dialect dative plural ἄνδρεσι Alcaeus Lyricus “Supp.” 14.8: late nom. sg. ἄνδρας “Catalogus Codicum Astrologorum” 7.109.7: in Attic. the Art. often forms a crasis with the Noun, ἁνήρ for ὁ ἀνήρ, τἀνδρός, τἀνδρί for τοῦ ἀνδρός, etc., ἅνδρες for οἱ ἄνδρε; the Ionic dialect crasis is ὡνήρ, ὧνδρες, Herodotus Historicus 4.161, 134: Ep. also ἀνέρα, ἀνέρος, ἀνέρι, _dual_ ἀνέρε, pl. ἀνέρες, ἀνέρας, ἄνδρεσσι. Epic dialect Poets mostly use ᾱ in arsi, ᾰ in thesi; but in trisyllable forms with stem ἀνέρ- always ; so also Trag. in Lyric poetry, Sophocles Tragicus “Trachiniae” 1011, “OT” 869. But in Trag. senarians ᾰ always. (ἀ- in nominative by analogy; cf. Sanskrit nar- from I.- Euripides Tragicus ner-, nṛ- from nṛ-, Gk. ἀνδρ- from ṇr-):—man, opposed to woman (ἄνθρωπος being man as opposed to to beast), Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 17.435, Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 21.323 ; τῶν ἀνδρῶν ἄπαις without male children, Plato Philosophus “Leges” 877e; in Homerus Epicus mostly of princes, leaders, etc., but also of free men; ἀ δήμου one of the people, Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 2.198, compare Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 17.352 ; with a qualifying word to indicate rank, ἀ. βουληφόρος Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 2.61; ἀ. βασιλεύς Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 24.253; ἡγήτορες ἄ. __II man, opposed to god, πατὴρ ἀνδρῶν τε θεῶν τε prev. work 1.544, al. ; Διὸς ἄγγελοι ἠδὲ καὶ ἀνδρῶν prev. work 334, compare 403, Herodotus Historicus 5.63, etc. : most common in plural, yet sometimes in singular, e.g. Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 18.432:—frequently with a Noun added, βροτοί, θνητοὶ ἄ., Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 5.197, 10.306; ἄ. ἡμίθεοι Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 12.23; ἄ. ἥρωες prev. work 5.746 :—also of men, opposed to monsters, Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 21.303 :—of men in societies and cities, οὔτε παρ᾽ ἀνδράσιν οὔτ᾽ ἐν ναυσὶ κοίλαις Pindarus Lyricus “O.” 6.10 ; and so probably, ἄλλοτε μέν τ᾽ ἐπὶ Κύνθου ἐβήσαο.., ἄλλοτε δ᾽ ἂν νήσους τε καὶ ἀνέρας.. “hymnus ad Apollinem” 142.
__III man, opposed to youth, unless the context determines the meaning, as in οὔ πως ἔστι νεωτέρῳ ἀνδρὶ μάχεσθαι ἄνδρα γέροντα Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 18.53 ; but ἀ. alone always means a man in the prime of life, especially warrior, ἀ. ἕλεν ἄνδρα Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 15.328; so ἀ. ἀντ᾽ ἀνδρὸς ἐλύθησαν Thucydides Historicus 2.103 ; the several ages are given as παῖς, μειράκιον, ἀ., πρεσβύτης Xenophon Historicus “Symposium” 4.17 ; εἰς ἄνδρας ἐγγράφεσθαι, συντελεῖν, Demosthenes Orator 19.230, Isocrates Orator 12.212; εἰς ἄνδρας ἀναβῆναι “BMus.Inscription” 898 ; in Inscrr. relating to contests, opposed to παῖδες, “IG” 22.1138.10, etc.

__VI.2 ὁ ἀνήρ, by crasis Attic dialect ἁνήρ, Ionic dialect ὡνήρ, is frequently used emphatically for αὐτός, ἐκεῖνος Aristophanes Comicus “Vespae” 269, probably in Plato Philosophus “Sophista” 216b, etc. : sometimes so in oblique cases without the Article, Sophocles Tragicus “Trachiniae” 55, 109, 293, etc. ; but not in Prose.
__VI.3 ἀ. ὅδε, ὅδ᾽ ἀ., in Trag., ={ἐγώ}, Sophocles Tragicus “Ajax” 78, Euripides Tragicus “Alcestis” 690, etc.
__VI.4 πᾶς ἀ. every man, every one, frequently in Plato Philosophus “Leges” 736c, al., compare Euripides Tragicus “Orestes” 1523.

__VI.8 In LXX, ἀνήρ ={ἕκαστος, δότε μοι ἀνὴρ ἐνώτιον} LXX.Judg.8.24; ἀ. τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ προσκολληθήσεται 'each to his fellow', of leviathan's scales, LXX.Job.41.8; also ἀ. εἷς LXX.4Ki.6.2; with negatives, ἀ. μὴ ἐπισκεπήτω prev. work 10.19; ἀνὴρ ἀνήρ any one, Le. 15.2.
