δεῖ impersonal (δέω), [in LXX chiefly for infin. with לְ H3926 ;] one must, it is necessary: c. inf., Mt 26:54, Mk 13:7, Ac 5:29, al.; c. acc. et inf., Mt 16:21, Mk 8:31, Jo 3:7, Ac 25:10, al.; with ellipse of acc., Mt 23:23; of acc., and inf., Mk 13:14, Ro 1:27 8:26; οὐ (μὴ) δεῖ (non licet), ought not, must not: Ac 25:24, II Ti 2:24; impf., ἔδει, of necessity or obligation in past time regarding a past event (Bl., § 63, 4), Mt 18:33, Lk 15:32, Jo 4:4, Ac 27:21, al.; periphr., δέον ἐστίν (as in Attic, χρεών ἐστι = χρή, v.s. δέον), Ac 19:36; id., with ellipse of ἐστίν, I Pe 1:6 τὰ μὴ δέοντα (= ἃ οὐ δεῖ I Ti 5:13.

SYN.: ὀφείλει G3784, expressing moral obligation, as distinct from δεῖ, denoting logical necessity and χρή G5534, a need which results from the fitness of things (v. Tr., Syn., § cvii, 10; Westc. on He 2:1, I Jn 2:6; Hort on Ja 3:10).

  subjunctive δέη, sometimes contraction δῆ (in codices of Comedy texts, as Aristophanes Comicus “Ranae” 265) ; ὁπόσου κα δῆ “IG” 4.1484.65 (Epid.), compare “SIG” 245 G 47 (Delph.); opt. δέοι Thucydides Historicus 4.4 ; infinitive δεῖ; participle δέον (see. infr. IV): imperfect ἔδει, Ionic dialect ἔδεε: future δεήσει Euripides Tragicus “Hippolytus” 941, etc. : aorist I ἐδέησε Thucydides Historicus 2.77, etc. —Impers. from δέω (A), there is need (the sense of moral obligation, properly belonging to χρή, is later, Sophocles Tragicus “Philoctetes” 583, etc.):
__I c.accusative person et infinitive, it is needful for one to do, one must, once in Homerus Epicus, τί δὲ δεῖ πολεμιζέμεναι.. Ἀργείους why need the Argives fight? __I.2 with accusative of things et infinitive, δεῖ τι γενέσθαι Thucydides Historicus 5.26; παραδείγματα, καθ᾽ ἃ δέοι ἀποκρίνεσθαι Plato Philosophus “Meno” 79a, etc. ; also ἐπεὶ δέ οἱ ἔδεε κακῶς γενέσθαι since it was fated for him.., since he was doomed.., Herodotus Historicus 2.161, compare 8.53, 9.109, Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Tyrannus” 825 ; for οἴομαι δεῖν, see at {οἴομαι}.
__I.3 absolutely with infinitive understood, μὴ πεῖθ᾽ ἃ μὴ δεῖ (i.e. πείθειν) Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Coloneus” 1442, compare “OT” 1273 ; εἴ τι δέοι, ἤν τι δέῃ (i.e. γενέσθαι), Xenophon Historicus “Memorabilia” 1.2.59, Thucydides Historicus 1.44 ; κἂν δέῃ (i.e. τροχάζειν), τροχάζῶ {5-6th c.BC}: Philetaerus Comicus 3.
__II with genitive of things, there is need of, frequently with negative, οὐδὲν ἂν δέοι πολλοῦ ἀργυρίου Plato Philosophus “Crito” 45a, etc.; τί δεῖ τῆς ἀρετῆ; Aristoteles Philosophus “Politica” 1309b10 ; sometimes with infinitive added, μακροῦ λόγου δεῖ ταῦτ᾽ ἐπεξελθεῖν Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 870, compare 875, “Supp.” 407.
__II.b frequently in phrases, πολλοῦ δεῖ there wants much, far from it, ὀλίγου δεῖ there wants little, all but; in full with infinitive, πολλοῦ δεῖ οὕτως ἔχειν Plato Philosophus “Apologia” 35d; τοὺς Πλαταιέας ἐλαχίστου ἐδέησε διαφθεῖραι τὸ πῦρ Thucydides Historicus 2.77; πολλοῦ γε δεῖ, πολλοῦ γε καὶ δεῖ Aristophanes Comicus “Acharnenses” 543, Demosthenes Orator 18.300, 21.71 ; τοῦ πλεῦνος αἰεὶ ἔδεε there was always further to travel, Herodotus Historicus 4.43; τοῦ παντὸς δεῖ Lucianus Sophista “Merc.Cond.” 13: also ὀλίγου δεῖν absolutely, in same sense, Plato Philosophus “Apologia” 22a, etc.; μικροῦ δεῖν Demosthenes Orator 27.29.
