σάκκος also written σάκος, -ου, ὁ (cf. Heb. שַׂק ^H8242, which it renders in LXX), 1. a coarse cloth, sackcloth, usually made of hair: Re 6:12. 2. Anything made of sackcloth; (a) a sack (Ge 42:25, al.); (b) a garment of sackcloth, expressive of mourning or penitence: Mt 11:21, Lk 10:13, Re 11:3.†

__III coarse beard, like rough hair-cloth, σάκον πρὸς ταῖν γνάθοιν ἔχειν Aristophanes Comicus “Ecclesiazusae” 502; compare σακεσφόρος 11. —The form σάκος is said to be Attic dialect, Aelius Dionysius Grammaticus “fragment” 296, Phrynichus Atticista 229, Moeris Grammaticus p.354 P., 13th-1Thomas Magister Grammaticus p.344 R., etc.; while σάκκος is called Doric dialect by Phrynichus Atticista same place, Hellenic by Moeris Grammaticus and 13th-1Thomas Magister Grammaticus same places, Comic by 2nd c.AD(?): Pollianus Epigrammaticus 7.191. In Aristophanes Comicus “Acharnenses” 822, “Ec.” 502, σάκος is required by the metre, as is σάκκος in “Ach.” 745 (from Megarian), and in Hipponax Iambographus same place; codices of Herodotus Historicus give σάκκος . Inscrr. have σάκος “IG” 22.1672.73,74, 108 and σάκκος prev. work 198 : Papyri have σάκος “PCair.Zen.” 753.27 (3rd c.BC), “UPZ” 84.52 (2nd c.BC) , but oftener σάκκος “PSI” 4.427.1, 14 (3rd c.BC), “PTeb.” 116.3 (2nd c.BC) , etc. (Prob. the word, like the thing, was borrowed from Phoenicia, cf. Hebrew saq.)
