   “Samos”, the name of several Greek islands:
__1 old name for Κεφαλληνία (which see), Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 2.634, Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 4.671 ; also called Σάμη, 1.246, “hymnus ad Apollinem” 429 ; though this, accusative to others, is a town on the island: hence adjective Σαμαῖος, α, ον, 1st cStrabo Geographus 10.2.13.

__3 “Samos”, the large island over against Ephesus, first in “hymnus ad Apollinem” 41 : hence adjective Σάμιος, α, ον, Herodotus Historicus 1.70, etc. ; ἡ Σαμία (i.e. γῆ) prev. passage, Theophrastus Philosophus “de Lapidibus” 62 ; also Σ. ἀστήρ, clay with medicinal properties, Galenus Medicus 12.178 :—Σαμιακός, ή, όν, Cratinus Comicus 13. (Acc. to 1st cStrabo Geographus 8.3.19, 10.2.17, σάμος was an old word signifying a height.)
